If you want to add your custom place like some folder to "places" menu on ubuntu you can do it like this Go to your folder to be added to "places" menu and select "Add Bookmark" from Bookmark tab of top menus. And you can do it same with pressing "Ctrl + D" when you have opened current place. You can get a clear idea with screen shot.
